I am the Vice Chair for Education in Psychiatry and Director of Residency Training in Psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine. When I decided to go to medical school, way back in the ”old days”, I never dreamed that I would wind up with a career in medical education, despite the fact that I managed to get a Master of Arts in Teaching degree when I finished college. I was born right here in Manhattan, in Lenox Hill Hospital while my father was a fourth year medical student at NYU – in the “very old” days! When I was about 7, we moved to Long Island, NY where my Dad opened his office in our basement. I went to college at Bryn Mawr where I was a political science major with no interest in medicine, but with a passion to try to change the world. I ended up in the masters of education program (Antioch College) more or less by accident and worked for several years in community organizing in Boston and in a psychiatry department in Canada. Ultimately, I decided I needed a ”skill” and completed the post- baccalaureate pre- med program at Columbia where I subsequently went to medical school. I began a career in internal medicine at St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Medical Center but in the middle of my internship year, decided I had made a mistake and switched into psychiatry. I graduated from Columbia’s psychiatry residency and after a year of working in an assortment of jobs there, I became the Assistant Director of Medical Student Education. As they say, the rest is history and in the early 1. I came to NYU to run the training program. I also became involved in the American Psychiatric Association and ultimately was elected APA President. I was also the first Associate Dean and Designated Institutional Official for ACGME programs at NYU in 2. ACGME Board of Directors. One of my favorite current roles is hosting a weekly call- in show for consumers on Sirius Radio’s Doctor Radio Channel which is sponsored by NYU. My husband is also a psychiatrist (retired) and my daughter is entering her senior year in high school. Kim Daniel Kim Education: Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, BS, Biology and Neuroscience - 1998 New York University School of Medicine, New York, New York, MD - 2002 Post Residency Position: Attending, NY Presbyterian. Residency Program; Meet Our Faculty; Print. I am the Associate Director of Residency Training at Bellevue Hospital for the NYU Psychiatry Residency Program. I received my medical degree from Cornell University. Christina Ahn, MDWelcome! I am the Associate Director of Residency Training at NYU. I graduated from Harvard College with a joint degree in Government and Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies and I completed my medical degree at Vanderbilt School of Medicine. On my interview day at NYU, I remember how high caliber, candid and cool the NYU psychiatry residents were; it was clear to me that they were a dedicated and compassionate group, bringing vitality and a quick sense of humor to their work. Additionally, I was drawn to the opportunities at NYU to work in multiple systems of care, to serve a diverse patient population and to train in a progressive and dynamic learning environment. I felt privileged to begin my psychiatry residency training at NYU in 2. New York City to explore and start a career in psychiatry. As a resident, I found myself surrounded by a community of inspiring co- residents who were trustworthy and competent when it came to getting the job done and insightful, brilliant and lively when we processed our experiences together. The NYU Department of Psychiatry affords an array of advanced electives and during residency, I was able to complete the NYU Training Program in Human Sexuality, a couples therapy elective and a Psychoanalytic Fellowship. I served as Chief Resident in my final year and then started the NYU Women's Mental Health Fellowship in 2. In fellowship, I focused on treating women with psychiatric symptoms associated with the menstrual cycle, infertility (and related treatments) and perinatal losses, as well as in the preconception, pregnancy and postpartum periods. I also co- led a parent- infant group focused on emotional attachment and bonding and developed an interest in the psychodynamics of reproduction and starting families. In addition to my administrative role in the residency, I continue to see patients at the NYU faculty practice, I co- lead the course on Supportive Psychotherapy in the PGY2 and PGY3 years and teach resident didactics in the reproductive psychiatry curriculum. Rebecca Lewis, MDHi everyone! I am the Associate Director of Residency Training at Bellevue Hospital for the NYU Psychiatry Residency Program. I am also the Associate Director for the NYU Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship. I completed my undergraduate studies in Neuroscience & Behavior at Columbia University, and I completed my medical degree at Harvard Medical School. I then joined the NYU family as a PGY1 psychiatry resident in 2. I continued my training in forensic psychiatry at NYU and graduated from the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship in 2. Weill Department of Medicine. About Us; Divisions & Programs; Education. Internal Medicine Residency Program at Weill Cornell Medical College. The Rockefeller University Hospital. Since I completed my training, I have been an attending psychiatrist in the Bellevue CPEP (Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program.) In addition, I have been working as the supervising psychiatrist for the Bellevue Mobile Crisis Unit since 2. One of my roles for the residency is to liaise between the Bellevue Department of Psychiatry and the NYU Psychiatry Residency Training Program. NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue, which is part of the New York City hospital system, is the oldest public hospital in the United States. The mission of Bellevue is to provide care to anyone who presents to our hospital, regardless of ability to pay. In addition to the many medical and surgical services, there is a wide variety of psychiatric services available to our patients at Bellevue. There are 3. 50 inpatient psychiatric beds, including 6 general psychiatry units, 1 dual diagnosis unit, 1 detox unit, 1 medical psychiatry unit, 2 forensic psychiatry units, and 3 child/adolescent psychiatry units. The Bellevue Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) provides emergency psychiatric care and offers extended observation for psychiatric patients in the emergency room. There is also a pediatric CPEP at Bellevue for children younger than 1. In addition, there are multiple mental health clinics at Bellevue, including the adult outpatient psychiatry clinic, child & adolescent mental health clinic, survivors of torture program, first episode psychosis program, World Trade Center clinic, Chemical Dependency Outpatient Program, Methadone Treatment Program, and the Bellevue Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team. Given the public mission and the diversity of psychiatric care provided at Bellevue, I can’t think of a better place to train! Site Directors. Marion Eakin, MDI am the Director of the VA Mental Health Clinic VA and I serve as the VA Site Director for the NYU Adult Psychiatry Residency Training Program. I joined the staff at the NYHHS VA in 2. Working within the residency program at NYU, I coordinate a PGY3 outpatient rotation in the VA Mental Health Clinic during which residents have the chance to work with veterans of all eras, particularly those returning from combat tours. I also provide support and work as a liaison for the other VA core rotations undertaken by the NYU psychiatry and double- board residents. Over the course of four training years, residents rotate through VA inpatient medicine, outpatient neurology, inpatient psychiatry, and consult- liaison psychiatry. Residents also take weeks of night float call at the VA in their PGY2 year. One of the great strengths of the NYU program is the exceptional opportunity to train in high caliber public, private, state, and federal facilities and to be exposed to so many systems of care. In 1. 97. 9 I joined the Psychiatric Residency Training Program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Originally, I had not intended to stay here this long, but how can you leave New York City? These circuitous beginnings instilled a love of teaching and life- long learning. I dedicated my career as a psychiatrist to the psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacological treatment of patients in ambulatory clinics of public hospitals in NYC - always in conjunction with residency training and medical student supervision. Ten years ago, I made a mid- career switch and became a college mental health psychiatrist at New York University. I had first- hand experience chaperoning my two daughters through college and graduate education and became fascinated with the developmental challenges of this phase of life. I believe I can empathize with the dilemmas of young adults from the point of view of the college student and the parent alike. Soon after my arrival at the Counseling and Wellness Services in the Student Health Center near Washington Square the PGY 3 psychiatric residents began populating our offices helping us provide mental health services for a population of 5. NYU undergraduate and graduate students. Also, occasionally, PGY 4s appear for an elective to solidify previously learned brief psychotherapy skills and pursue a scholarly project. The cohorts of students are in constant flux and keep us on our toes: we have encountered Generation X, the Millennials, Generation Text, and the internet- savvy Generation Z. Who will be next? Being in college can easily feel overwhelming. So much rides on a student's academic success. Emerging adults, as we call them now, are emotionally vulnerable to homesickness or smarting from the pain of a romantic relationship break- up. They may experience difficulties paying attention in class or suffer from acute anxiety, mood disorders, suicidal thoughts, substance use, eating disorders or psychosis. I believe, it is very important to train psychiatric residents in college mental health. They will be familiar with a developmentally- oriented approach and can make an intervention in this crucial time of life regardless of where they may encounter patients of this age cohort. Tara Straka, MDI am the Site Director for the NY State OMH (Office of Mental Health) rotations in the NYU Psychiatry Residency Training program. I completed my undergraduate studies in Psychology and Art History at Northwestern University. I earned my medical degree at Columbia University in 2. NYU for general psychiatry residency training.
